Demand for meat rises
Cambodia’s expanding population, urbanization, economic growth and the changing consumption patterns of the population have created opportunities for the growth of the livestock sector in the country, according to the annual report of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. “With an estimated annual human population growth rate of 1.8 percent, the projected meat demand in Cambodia from 2016 to 2024 is anticipated to increase from about 280,000 metric tons to 328,085 metric tons a year,” stated the MAFF report. It indicated that about 1.35 million domesticated animals were slaughtered for meat throughout the country, to meet the population’s demand. “In 2016, the number of registered slaughterhouses in Cambodia was 148. There were also 41 family-owned slaughterhouses,” said MAFF. “In the registered and family-owned slaughterhouses, a total of 1,350,682 domestic animals were killed for meat.”
