Keith Richburg is the director of the Journalism and Media Studies Centre at the University of Hong Kong. He spent more than two decades as a foreign correspondent for the Washington Post covering Africa, Europe, China and Southeast Asia, making his first visit to Cambodia in 1986, during a stint when he was based in Manila. As a reporter, Richburg extensively covered both the European Union and ASEAN, including attending the first ASEAN summit after Cambodia’s accession to the bloc in 1999. In a recent interview by phone, VOA Khmer’s Sopheak Hoeun asked the veteran journalist about the lessons Southeast Asian nations could learn from Britain’s momentous decision to leave the E.U. in a referendum on June 23. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
