Military MP calls for new terms on ‘cheap’ land leases

US$54 a year for prime space in a high-end shopping centre; $3850 a year for a 553-acre golf course; $4625 a year for a hotel on 1.6 acres of land: These are just some of the cut-price rates for state-owned land that have been revealed to the regional parliament in Mandalay.
The contracts were disclosed to parliament in a report by the Mandalay Region government on its activities in the 2015-16 financial year.
The figures were highlighted in the hluttaw on 8 December by a military MP who said the rental fees should be renegotiated to give the state a better deal. He described the current rents as “pretty cheap”.
